The sculptures rank high as works of art, and the majority of them are religious. The eastern caves have the facades covered with very handsome and varied designs ; but the ornaments in most of the viharas are found about the doorways, windows, and the openings of sanctuaries; and consist of male and female figures, and beautiful frets and scrolls. In modern caves, the walls of the aisles, the columns and entablatures, of pillars, and the relic-shrines are covered with belts of elaborate tracery, pretty statuettes, lively and well-executed elephants, hunting scenes, human figures and faces, all tastefully rendered.
