The “minar” or “pillar of victory” at Daulatabad was raised by Alau-d-din Bahmani (A.D. 1435-1457), to commemorate his conquest of the fort. The basement is an oblong stone platform 15 feet high, and contains twenty-four chambers. The shaft, which is another 90 or 100 feet high, tapers slightly, and is surmounted by a spire. It is relieved by several ornamental bands; and a large gallery about midway, has a handsome balustrade all round, and is supported on ornamental brackets. There are two discs higher up, and the whole pillar outside was covered with glazed Persian tiles, of much beauty of pattern and harmony of colour, but these have nearly all fallen away.
